Vanderbilt Commodores Announce 2014 Baseball Schedule

Vanderbilt BaseballVanderbilt University baseball had a season for the record books in 2013 and every team in the SEC was well acquainted with the success of the Commodores. How acquainted were the Commodores with their conference?

Well, for starters they did not lose a single series against SEC teams all season, wherein they swept Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Tennessee en route to a 26-3 record in conference play.

That 26-3 record now stands as an SEC record, as no other team has ever won 26 games in divisional play. Despite finishing the regular season ranked as the number two team in the country with a 48-7 record (54-12 overall at the conclusion of the postseason), the Commodores were upset by the Louisville Cardinals in the Nashville Super Regional, ending their road to Omaha and subsequent bid for their first national championship in school history.

Despite losing the likes of Connor Harrell, Tony Kemp, Mike Yastrzemski, and Kevin Ziomek to the draft this year, the Commodores still possess a squad that should be competitive, led by staff ace Tyler Beede and sophomore infielder Xavier Turner.

“Our schedule is very challenging and will most certainly give us a realistic indicator of where we are prior to the start of the SEC season,” head coach Tim Corbin said. “We have always tried to measure ourselves early against proven opponents and this year will be no different.”

Corbin is correct in his assessment, as the Commodores will face SEC opponents in 27 games this season, with key series matchups against Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M.

Nonetheless, Vanderbilt will commence the 2014 season on the road with a three-game series at Long Beach State between February 14-16, before heading back to Nashville for a 10-game home stretch that will include a three-game series against Stanford.
