ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington Senior Greg McCall smacked an eighth inning two-run double that would prove to be the game-winner as the Mavericks defeated Western Kentucky 5-3 at Clay Gould Ballpark in Friday night Sun Belt Action. The hit was McCall’s only hit of the night and it capped off the Mavs come-from-behind effort to take game one of the series.
Justin Hageman had pitched well for WKU having allowed only two earned runs heading into the eighth inning before walking Ryan Boettger, hitting Matt Shortall with a pitch and then surrendering the McCall double. Hageman was pulled after surrendering a single to John Michael Twichell without recording an out in the eighth inning.
UTA starter Daniel Milliman allowed three runs, two earned, over 4.2 innings of work before leaving the game with his team trailing 3-1. Zach Hobbs and Jacob Moreland shut out the Hilltoppers over the remaining 4.1 innings of the game to give the Mavericks an opportunity to take the lead.
Moreland would improve to 2-2 with the win while Hageman fell to 5-2 in a losing effort. WKU had their opportunities in the game stranding seven runners, three in scoring position, in the game.
The Maverick are now a game up on WKU in the Sun Belt Conference standings.
