Shane McCain Silences Southern Miss, Troy Trojans Win, 5-0

Troy baseballHATTIESBURG, Miss. – Troy Trojans Senior lefty Shane McCain threw seven scoreless innings as the Trojans defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 5-0. McCain struck out six while allowing four hits and two walks in his second victory on the season. Junior righty Jeremy McGowan pitched two scoreless frames allowing a hit while striking out two for his first save.

Troy hitters would get to Southern Miss starter Cameron Giannini in the second and third innings to take an early lead that they would not relinquish.

Junior right fielder Jo-El Bennett led off the second inning with a triple down the first base line and would score on a sac fly by Junior catcher Adam Tewksbury to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans started the second inning with back-to-back singles by Senior second baseman Garrett Pitts and Junior left fielder Trevin Hall. Junior Kyle Brown advanced both runners on a sac bunt and Pitts would score on a ground out by Senior first baseman Matthew Howard. Junior third baseman Nick Masonia knocked in Hall with a single to left field, extending the lead to 3-0.

Troy loaded the bases in the ninth. Junior center fielder Clay Holcomb singled to lead off the inning then stole a base. Senior short stop Tyler Vaughn bunted his way on base after Tewksbury walked setting up the Trojans with a bases loaded, no-outs situation. Holcomb scored on a Pitts’ sac fly and Tewksbury scored on a bases loaded walk earned by Brown to push the lead to 5-0.

Vaughn went 3 for 4 and Trevin Hall went 3 for 5 to pace the balanced Trojan attack. Troy’s win earned a split in the series at this point and sets up a rubber match for Sunday afternoon. Trojan’s Senior righty Will Starling takes the hill hoping to earn the series win for Troy.
