Rice University Owls 2014 Baseball Schedule Released

Rice University Baseball The Rice University Owls will begin their 2014 season with a three-game series against Stanford in Palo Alto from February 14-16, before heading back home to Reckling Park for a six-game set, highlighted by a three-games series against Purdue.

From here, the Owls will travel to Minute Made Park, the home of the Houston Astros, where they will take on Texas, TCU, and Texas Tech in the Houston College Classic from February 28-March 2.

The Owls will spend 27 of their 54 regular season games at home, highlighted by single game matchups against Texas and Texas A&M, as well as a three-game series against conference rival East Carolina in early-April.

Rice will also face off against Conference USA (C-USA) competition a total of 27 times throughout the 2014 season, starting with a three-game series against Old Dominion from March 7-9. The Owls finished last season with a 15-9 conference record, good enough for the conference championship, which they have secured in seven of the eight years since moving to C-USA in 2006.

Last season also marked the fifth time in eight years that the Owls captured the C-USA Tournament championship and the 19th straight season (dating back to 1995) that they have appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

Led behind the pitching tandem of Austin Kubitza and John Simms, the Owls were able to down Oregon in the Eugene Regionals and secure its place in the Raleigh Super Regionals against NC State. However, the Owls would fall just short of advancing to their first College World Series since 2008, losing in two straight contests to the Wolfpack.

Now that both Kubitza and Simms are gone (Kubitza was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round, while Simms was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB Draft), the Owls will need to trek on behind the leadership of pitchers Jordan Stephens and Zech Lemond.

Stephens led the team in victories (eight) and innings pitched (118 2/3), while Lemond was given American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) third-team All-America honors (along with Kubitza) for his efforts as the Owls’ closer in 2013.

With the start of the 2014 season less than three months away, the Owls will look to advance to their eighth trip to Omaha and take home their second national championship in school history (their one and only coming in 2003).
