Liberty University 2014 Baseball Schedule

Liberty Baseball NewsThe Liberty University Flames will commence their 2014 season with a three-game set at the North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville from February 14-16, wherein they will face off against North Florida, Missouri, and Richmond before heading back to Lynchburg for their home opener against Old Dominion on February 18.

The Flames will spend 29 of their 56 regular season games at Liberty Baseball Stadium (the Flames christened the new stadium last season after spending 34 years at Worthington Stadium) and will face Big South conference competition for a total of 27 games, commencing with a three-game series against Campbell at home from March 14-16.

Liberty will face six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, which includes the likes of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina, who fell just short of reaching the College World Series Finals in Omaha.

Liberty had a season to remember in 2013, as the Flames reached a NCAA Regional final for the first time in school history. Coming into the Columbia Regional, the Flames had captured the Big South title (their first since 2000) and were ultimately given the number three seed.

The Flames were impressive, besting the Clemson Tigers twice en route to garnering a shot advancing to the Chapel Hill Super Regional against North Carolina.

However, Liberty fell just short of the mark, falling 6-4 to South Carolina, as the Gamecocks would move on to face the Tar Heels. Despite the loss, the Flames had a lot to be proud of, namely claiming the Big South title and posting 35 or more wins in a single season for the fifth time in six years under the guidance of head coach Jim Toman (the Flames would finish 36-29 on the year in 2013).

It was also the first time in school history that the Flames finished the season ranked in one of the three national polls. Liberty was ranked number 26 in the final poll conducted by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Flames were also able to garner votes in the final USA Today Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers polls.

The Flames will look to defend their Big South title in 2014 and advance to their fifth NCAA Tournament in school history. Next year’s Big South Baseball Championship will be held at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, South Carolina between May 20-24, wherein the winner will automatically advance to the NCAA Tournament.
