College Baseball Central Top 25: 5/8/2017

Louisville Athletics

Another weekend of college baseball action is in the books, and for once, things pretty much stayed the same in the College Baseball Central Top 25 rankings. That’s what happens when only three teams in the previous rankings drop a series and you have a few other teams that more or less took the week off.

We had a couple of fallers inside the top ten, but no other real action within the upper crust of teams. Previous number four Kentucky falls to ten after losing their weekend series at home to Georgia. Previous number ten Auburn also fell. They’re now at 17 after being swept by rival Alabama at home.

With those teams vacating their spots in the top ten, a few teams shifted up a spot or two, highlighted by TCU moving up two spots, to seven, after sweeping Texas, and Stanford moving up two spots, to nine, after winning their weekend series with Arizona State.

With just a couple of exceptions, everyone else within the rankings either moved up a single spot or held their place from last week. Those exceptions are Missouri State moving up two spots, to 21, after another weekend sweep in MVC play moves their league record to 14-0, Wake Forest, joining the rankings at 24 after winning their weekend series with Boston College, and Texas A&M, falling four spots, to 25, after losing their series with Mississippi State. Arkansas, previously 25, after going 1-1 in their rain-shortened series with Tennessee, is the only team to fall out of the rankings this time around.

Two additional teams, along with Wake Forest, were considered teams in the hunt to join the rankings. One was Indiana, after the Hoosiers swept their series with non-conference foe Xavier. The other was Houston, a team that has been knocking on the door of the rankings for much of the second half of the season. They won a series with UConn over the weekend, but including a midweek loss to Sam Houston State, they went just 2-2 on the week, making it tougher to include them in the rankings. In the end, Wake just had the overall resume and the results this week to make the cut.
