College Baseball Central Top 25: 4/17/2017

Chaos has reigned in recent weeks in the College Baseball Central top 25, but that wasn’t really the case this week, as a good majority of the teams in our rankings held serve this time around.

In the top ten, there was really only one notable change. After losing their series with West Virginia, TCU falls from three to six, with North Carolina, Clemson, and Texas Tech each moving up one spot as a result. The rest of the top ten remained unchanged, including the top spot, with Oregon State continuing their dominant ways, even as they finally lost a game this weekend for the first time in a long time.

Outside of the top ten, we had some jumpers. Kentucky moves up two spots, to 12, after winning their weekend series with Missouri. Michigan is a big jumper this week, going from 19 to 13 after a 4-0 week that included an emphatic sweep of Oklahoma. Arkansas is the last big jumper of note. They move from 24 to 18 after a 4-0 week that included a quality midweek win over Missouri State and a sweep of Georgia.

Two new teams also joined the rankings. Mississippi State is in all the way to 15. They’ve been on the cusp over the last several weeks, and with a road series win over South Carolina, they just couldn’t be denied anymore. Texas A&M also comes back into the rankings after several weeks away. They’ve been pretty hot of late also, with their most recent result a sweep of Alabama.

There were also just a few big fallers this week, other than the aforementioned Horned Frogs. After a 1-3 week that included the series loss to Mississippi State and a midweek loss to North Carolina, South Carolina moves from 12 to 17. After a series loss to UCLA, Stanford drops from 13 to 19, and after the sweep at the hands of Michigan, Oklahoma falls from 16 to 23.

With two teams entering, two teams fell out of the top 25 this week. Mississippi falls from the rankings after a series loss to LSU. Their fall, however, has as much to do with general inconsistency over the last few weeks as it does the single series loss to the Tigers. Also falling out is Florida State. Last week, a lack of teams to rank at the back of the rankings kept the Seminoles in, but after going 1-2 on the week, they find themselves on the outside looking in.

There were a couple of teams that just missed the cut. West Virginia has been just about as hot as anyone over the last few weeks, and a series win over TCU is their most impressive result to date, but two things worked against them. First, they still have some bizarre early-season results on their resume that are a bit troublesome, and they did go 2-2 on the week, what with a midweek loss to Maryland on Tuesday. Rest assured, though, we’ve taken note of the Mountaineers and they’ll be in as long as they keep winning, and they’ve shown no signs of slowing down.

Houston also just missed the cut, as they have several times this season. A series win over Memphis is a nice result, but they also just went 2-2 on the week, making it tougher to rank them.
