College Baseball Central Top 25: 3/20/2017

After a weekend full of upsets and surprises, chaos reigns in our newest top 25 rankings.

It starts at the very top, as we have a new top-ranked team, the Louisville Cardinals. With Florida State having a tough week (more on that in a second), the Seminoles move out and the Cardinals swoop in after going 4-0 to run their overall record to 19-0. The schedule is still a little soft for our taste, but the Cardinals have dominated the competition and a sweep of ACC foe Boston College is not nothing.

Our first big jumper of the week happened right behind them, as Oregon State moved up three spots to number two after sweeping Arizona State. To round out the top five, Texas Tech jumped two spots to number five after sweeping their road series against Texas.

The back half of the top ten is almost exclusively teams that made jumps this time around. South Carolina is up two spots to number six after sweeping Tennessee. North Carolina is up three spots to seven after going 3-1 on the week with a midweek win over Maryland and a series win over Georgia Tech. Cal State Fullerton is up three spots to number eight after winning a quality midweek game over Arizona and sweeping New Mexico in three one-run games, and Clemson is up three spots as well, to number  nine, after winning their series with Virginia.

There were a few other notable jumps this week outside of the top ten. Mississippi is up to 12 from 14 after winning their series with Vanderbilt. Oklahoma State is up four spots, to 13, after going 5-0 on the week. Despite going 2-2 on the week, Arizona is up five spots to 15 after winning their weekend series with UCLA. As you will soon see, their jump had as much to do with basically the entire middle portion of last week’s rankings having losing weeks as it did their own success this past week, but a series win over the Bruins is still a good series win.

Florida Gulf Coast made another huge jump this week. They’re up eight spots to 16 after going 4-0. They took down another Sunshine State power in Florida State during the midweek before sweeping Rutgers over the weekend. And at the tail end of the rankings, St. John’s and South Florida made modest two and one-spot jumps, respectively, to 20 and 24, after undefeated weeks against relatively soft competition.

With all of this upward movement, there also has to be some downward movement.

It starts, of course with Florida State. They fall nine spots, to ten, after their 1-4 week. Louisiana-Lafayette, after a 2-2 week, falls two spots, to 11, to knock them out of the top ten. They weren’t the only team to fall out of the top ten, however, as Florida falls eight spots to 14 after being swept by Auburn. Baylor drops two spots, to 18, after a 2-2 week that included a series loss to West Virginia, Virginia falls four spots, to 22, after their series loss to Clemson, and Coastal Carolina is just barely hanging on in the rankings, as they fall 12 spots, to 25, after losing their series with Texas State.

Three new teams joined the rankings this week. Missouri is in at 17 after they ran their overall record to 19-1 with a 4-0 week that included a road sweep of Alabama. Michigan is also in at 21 after they’ve been in the mix to be included in these rankings on several occasions, including in the preseason. Finally, Kentucky joins the party at 23 after they swept Texas A&M on the road.

The three teams falling from the ranking are East Carolina, after they were swept by Mercer, Vanderbilt, after a series loss to Mississippi, and Texas A&M, after their 0-4 week that featured a midweek loss to rival Texas and that sweep at the hands of Kentucky.
