College Baseball Central Top 25: 3/5/2018

With marquee tournaments going on in Houston, Frisco, and Minneapolis, and several marquee series dotting the landscape this past weekend, it looked for all the world like this week’s rankings could be one of those that sees a lot of movement, but that just didn’t come to pass.

The first 14 teams in the rankings, in fact, are in the same place they were last time around. Some of these teams did enough to deserve to move up in most normal weeks, like Texas Tech and their dominant four-game series sweep of South Alabama and Kentucky and their 3-0 run through the tournament in Houston, but with no one at the top stumbling, there just wasn’t any reasonable way to force that movement.

The movement we did have begins at 15, where we see Clemson, up three spots from 18 after winning their rivalry series with South Carolina. The equal and opposite reaction to that is Vanderbilt trading spots with Clemson and moving from 15 to 18 after a 1-2 weekend in Houston.

Then, at the very back of the rankings, we have some minor movement, as Sam Houston State moves back one spot, to 23, after a 2-3 week including a 1-2 showing in Houston. In most other weeks, they may have moved back further or completely out of the rankings, but for one, it’s tough to punish them too much for losses to a solid Wright State team and surging teams in Kentucky and Mississippi State, and beyond that, there weren’t a ton of teams banging the door down to enter the rankings this weeks.

Speaking of teams entering the rankings we had two new ones. Auburn, off to a 12-0 start, jumps in at number 22 after a midweek win over South Alabama and a series sweep of BYU, and Coastal Carolina slides into the 25 spot after going 3-1 on the week and posting yet another winning record in their series of tournaments to begin the season.

The teams falling from the rankings this week are Houston, which went 0-3 in the tournament at Minute Maid Park, and East Carolina, a team that went 1-2 this weekend in their home tournament, the LeClair Classic.
