Boeing’s Millenium Space Systems will be unveiling its deorbiting satellite technology

Millenium Space Systems developed two smallsats that will be deployed in an experiment testing the drag-inducing component’s capacity to deorbit spacecraft from their orbits. The two payloads will be leaving for space via Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket. The two payloads are representative of the upcoming DragRacer program. Rocket Lab will be trying to salvage part of the Electron rocket to facilitate the reuse trials for the boosters. 

Alchemy, one of the two Millenium Space Systems payloads, will move over 70 meters within the device’s range to accelerate the possibility of the system dragging it to reenter the atmosphere. The other payload does not have a tether attached to it. The tethered payload will be coming back through the Earth’s atmosphere in one-and-a-half months, while the other will keep roaming its orbit for seven years.

The dragger that will be tethering the payload is called Terminator Tape and enough length for the spacecraft to move through hundreds of feet in its orbit. The project is an experiment to test the reliability, affordability, and simplicity of this deorbiting technology developed by Millenium Space Systems and Tethers Unlimited.

The chief executive of Millennium Space Systems, Stan Dubyn, explained that they are evaluating the potential of this method in deorbiting satellites’ remains at affordable prices to resolve the problem of debris accumulation in space. The chief of Tethers Unlimited, Robert Hoyt, outlines that this will be the first time to test the performance of the tether system in deorbiting remains from space and will help the engineers identify techniques that they can use to advance the performance of the device.

Other companies are also preparing to deploy their missions via Rocket Lab. The companies include UnseenLabs from France that will be deploying two CubeSats, and GomSpace that will be launching Bro-2 and Bro-3 satellites.

UnseenLabs wants to constellate 25 satellites in space to monitor the maritime operations of the French ships and combat any unseemly smugglers and pirates by monitoring their operations and sending the data to the concerned authorities.

Additionally, New Zealand’s newest satellite will be enjoying a rideshare mission on the Electron rocket. The country’s payload called Te Waka Āmiorangi o Aotearoa is a product of the development procedures by the University of Auckland and will mark the entry of the country into space expeditions. The spacecraft will be hosting the equipment to determine the degree of electrical disturbances in the top layer of the atmosphere and their subsequent impact on the planet’s tremors and earthquakes.

Finally, the chief executive of Rocket Lab, Peter Beck, expressed his satisfaction at the company’s successful spell in which it has acquired launch capabilities that they initially didn’t have. He added that it would be an exciting opportunity for its researchers and developers to expand their space operations and infrastructure.

Space Industry seeking regulatory reform progress

The recent progress in regulatory reforms is expected to continue regardless of the U.S. presidential elections’ outcome.  The profitable space sector hopes the reforms will be unaffected if there is a fresh president or a shift in party governance in congress post the elections. The last half a year has seen positive steps in the reforms with the introduction of reviewed commercial remote sensing guidelines, which took place in May, and the restructured launch and certifying guidelines on the 15th of October.

Before the launch of the two sets of regulations, the commercial space industry had been eagerly waiting for the changes as they faulted the current rules with additional costs and intricacy in their operations or even doubted being given license. These cases were evident in the commercial isolated sensing sector. The players complained of difficulties in acquiring new licenses to expand their operations, further hindering the U.S. companies from competing favorably with their global counterparts.

With the new regulations’ publication, NOAA’s Commercial Remote Sensing Regulatory Affairs (CRSRA) office has changed its licenses to new requirements. The new rules comprise a three-tier approach to an oversight that depends on comparing the licensed systems and what is available globally. During a conference of the Advisory Committee for Commercial Remote Sensing, the executive of CRSRA, Tahara Dawkins, stated that many of the certificates had been designated Tier 1, consisting of very few conditions. The new regulations have seen the time taken to process the licenses to drop from 65 days in 2019 to 43 days in 2020.

According to Wayne Monteith, the FAA associate administrator for commercial space transportation, the manuscript that contains the ultimate rule and 785 pages long is a prologue that discusses handling the comments given on a draft rule by FAA. He further noted that the new guidelines are diminutive than the prevailing ones with a margin of around 85 percent.

Eric Stallmer, the outbound president of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, called for the need to go on working with Wayne’s group for the takeoff and return streamlining. There is a workshop set on the same on the 14th of November, which the FAA will conduct to go through the proposed new regulations and the best way for the companies to shift from the pre-existing rules to the new ones. Stallmer further stated the need to develop an Article 6 solution that is voluntary in conjunction with the commerce department. The Article provides for the government’s requirement to offer authorization and continuing supervision of activities carried out in the space.

Asteroid Samples Leaking from OSIRIS-Rex

It is believed that NASA’s spacecraft, the OSIRIS-Rex collected so much sampling specimen from asteroid Bennu that the sampling head lid has jammed. This has caused the sampling materials to leak and change the team’s plans for the entire mission. During a media briefing held by NASA, the officials said that from some images which were taken from sampling device, they could see some materials leaking out of the collecting container from a gap that is along with the Mylar diaphragm that was instead supposed to be sealed from the bottom region of the head.

The images show a cloud of some small particles outside the TAGSAM; they are floating away from it at intervals of one centimeter per second. The estimated material, as it is seen on the images, is approximately 5 to 10 grams. NASA’s concern that there would be more material which might keep leaking from the gap has made the team change their initial plans for this mission. Lauretta has said that there is a maneuver planned for the weekend, whereby the spacecraft would be spun slowly to try and measure its moment of inertia. Hence, the mass of the sampling material has been canceled. They have underway planned to stow samples in the canister inside spacecraft where they will be sealed for a safe return journey to earth.

The stowing process was set to take place in November with assumptions that the sample material did not hit their preferred target of 60 grams. Lauretta also said that they might lose more tens of grams to stow the sample materials collected. They also see some probability that the material stuck on the bottom side of TAGSAM baseplate could also tend to interfere with the whole stowing process. Still, they hope that as from the images, none of the materials appeared to big enough to pose such a problem in the entire stowing process. 

Lauretta said that the TAGSAM could have collected much material and two kilograms in sample head. This assumption is made bearing in mind that the head plunged a depth as deep as 48 centimeters, which is below the surface of Bennu during the touch and go maneuver. He also stated that the greatest uncertainty they had about the asteroid during the entire mission development is that they never knew the strength of its surface.

EOS Data Analytics Dragonfly Multispectral Imagers Launch Scheduled for 2022

Early 2022, EOS Data Analytics will send a pair of Dragonfly Multispectral imagers to Earth’s low orbit. The conclusion was after it agreed with Dragonfly Aerospace about the same. The launch of the satellite carrying the HR-250 high-performance imagers will be around that time. The two multispectral images sent off as two payloads will work jointly. Together, they will create wide 7-spectral bands of pictures with a resolution of about 1 million.

The role of the imagers will be keeping track of environmental changes. They can monitor specific areas and also detects the ones impacted by destructive human activities. Whether it is a change in land cover or land use, no matter how insignificant it might be, the technology notifies the users as soon as it detects it.

Thanks to the use of two instead of one Dragonfly Multispectral Imagers, the coverage will be vast. With Dragonfly Aerospace offering customized spectral filters for the same, the data will also be accurate. The largest beneficiaries are the farmers because collected data allows them to know soil and yields conditions. That, in return, promotes precision farming.

The project would mean much to farmers since they will get data 5 to 7 times faster than using its alternatives. With some satellites, especially the non-commercial ones, acquiring imagery would mean waiting for it for months. With agriculture, that is a long time to wait, no doubt. The EOS project gives them the frequency that they deserve.

Another thing that is important to note is the clarity. The resolution is 3 to 10 times that of the available options. Thanks to such an improvement, the data accuracy that consequently makes analysis great and relevant become the order of the day.

Bryan Dean, the CEO of Dragon Aerospace, assured EOS Data Analytics high-precision data since the imagers will be subjected to both in-orbit calibration and intensive preflight. This launch’s specific dates, a collaboration of the Noosphere Ventures EOS Data Analytics subsidiary and the Southern African space company Dragonfly Aerospace will be announced later, probably when 2022 is quite near.

Lockheed Martin Executives are Happy with the ULA win against SpaceX

SpaceX has rapidly become a dominant player in the space industry to the extent that United Launch Alliance felt threatening its business. However, ULA chose not to sit back, relax, and wait for its fears to come true. Instead, it decided to fight back, and it is clear how competitive it is up to now. Those were remarks made by the Lockheed Martin executives. It was on October 20 when they were discussing the earnings of the third quarter with analysts.

Ken Possenriede, the company’s chief financial officer, said that ULA’s current price point is pleasing to customers. Consequently, if it comes a time to compete with SpaceX, it will bug a fair share. Boeing and Lockheed Martin own ULA jointly.

Possenriede also mentions the latest achievements of ULA. He acknowledges that during the National Security Space Launch Phase 2 procurement, it emerged the winner and SpaceX. He also added that the company won 60 percent, whereas the SpaceX tool home 40 percent. The percentages are for the missions that will fly in the next five years.

He feels confident about where ULA stands against SpaceX. That’s according to the recent competitions and the position it tool in comparison with SpaceX. ULA is happy about the outcomes. However, the team feels that SpaceX was an emerging threat, but now it is more than that. 

Lockheed Martin CEO Jim Taiclet informed the analysts about self-assertive the company is as far as the space business is concerned. It is a great contributor to its annual sales, contributing $12 billion out of the total $65 billion.

He added that some of its income sources are traditional military satellite constellations like the Global Positioning System, the Space-Based Infrared System, and the Advanced Extremely High Frequency. He also mentions Lockheed Martin’s recent significant achievement, which he termed as a real breakthrough. It is about the company building ten satellites for the Space Development Agency. The project revolves around the capability of 5G speed transmissions. That would mean having not only capacity but also latency signals across all domains, according to Taiclet.

Lockheed Martin plans to use Tyvak Nano-Satellite System’s small busses. However, the technical advice will be coming from Telesat, which is a renowned Canadian satellite operator. The other winner of this SDA’s project was York Space Systems. It will also produce ten satellites, and the 20 will make a mesh network in Earth’s low orbit. As for Lockheed Martin, their weights will range between 150 and 200 kilograms.

The CEO added that it is a milestone that will be quite competitive in the future. This team wants it to be a success and for the team to emerge on top.
