Brad Vachon Leads UT Arlington Over TCU

UT-Arlington Baseball Senior righty Brad Vachon allowed six hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings while allowing only one earned run to upset the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. The University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks (1-5) traveled to Fort Worth stumbling out of the gate to face No. 16 TCU (7-1), winners of 7 of 8 to start the year, who were riding a four game winning streak.

While Vachon was shutting down the Frogs, UT Arlington’s offense was lighting them up. The Mavericks pounded five consecutive hits with two outs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The third inning was capped off by Senior Greg McCall’s three run homer. Derek Miller singled and was driven in by a Darien McLemore double. McLemore scored on a Matt Shortall double. John Michael Twichell hit the Mavs third straight double to score Shortall. After a Ryan Bottger walk put two men on base McCall clubbed his first home run of the season.

TCU would get a run back in the bottom of the third only to give the run away after an error led to another Maverick score. Down 7-1 after four, the Frogs pulled starter Jordan Kipper and the bullpen pitched three scoreless innings, until the eighth when a pair of singles and a fielding error started a three-run rally by pushing across a run for UT Arlington. Then three consecutive walks by Travis Evans plated two more runs to push the lead to 10-1.

Two singles and a double would give TCU another run in the bottom of the eighth but it was too little, too late as the Mavericks pulled off the upset to move to 2-5 on the year and drop TCU to 7-2.
