Baylor’s Daniel Castano’s Stellar Performance Highlight of Big 12 Action

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman southpaw Daniel Castano struck out six over eight scoreless innings in a stellar performance helping Bayor defeat Kansas State 3-1 and avoid the series sweep. Castano improves to 5-1 on the season scattering six hits while keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard.

Castano retired the first seven Wildcats he faced and allowed an unearned run in the third when an error by red shirt freshman third baseman Ben Carl allowed sophomore right fielder Taylor Anderson to reach base. Anderson would be driven in on a double off the bat of junior third basemen Carter Yagi to tie the game at one apiece.

Castano would pitch his way out of a jams in the fifth and seventh innings before putting out the final five Wildcats he faced before giving way to Bears’ senior closer Josh Michalec (RHP) who pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save of the season.

Freshman left fielder Darryn Sheppard hit a solo homer in the fifth to put Baylor ahead 2-1. The Bears’ would manufacture two more runs as junior center fielder Logan Brown and senior second baseman Lawton Langford each doubled and advanced to third on sacrifices before eventually being scored.

Brown scored on a groundout by senior short stop Brett Doe and Langford scored on a single by junior right fielder Adam Toth for Baylor’s other two runs.

AUSTIN, Texas – TCU senior right fielder Dylan Fitzgerald hit a pair of late-inning RBI doubles and scored a run as the Horned Frogs ruined a great outing by No. 7 Texas’ senior righty Nathan Thornhill as TCU defeated Longhorns 3-1 for the road series sweep. Five TCU pitchers combined to hold Texas to one run in the victory to complete a well-pitched series for the Horned Frogs in which they allowed the Longhorns only one run in the sweep.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Junior second baseman Tim Arakawa was late inning magic hitting an RBI double to get No. 16 Oklahoma State on the scoreboard and then hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the lead as the Cowboys dropped Kansas 5-3 to clinch the series win. OK-State goes for the sweep on Sunday.

NORMAN, Okla. – Junior catcher Cameron O’Brien drove in five runs with two late-inning hits, a three-run homer in the fifth and a two-run double in the ninth, as West Virginia defeats Oklahoma 9-5 to take win the series. WVU trailed 4-0 before scoring three runs in the sixth and seventh to take the lead for good.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior lefty Chris Sadberry, freshman southpaw Ty Damron and sophomore righty Dalton Brown combined to pitch a two-hit shutout, striking out eight, for No. 21 Texas Tech in a 13-0 win over Prairie View A&M to sweep the weekend set. Junior second baseman Bryant Burleson and sophomore left fielder Tyler Nelsony each scored three time while senior Jake Barrios (DH) had three RBI providing all the run support the Red Raiders would need on the day.
