Arkansas State Red Wolves Two-Out Rally Beats UAB, 5-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Arkansas State Red Wolves had a two-out rally in the seventh inning scored four to avert a sweep at the hands of the UAB Blazers. Red Wolves third baseman Joe Schrimpf had one of his two RBI in the seventh to lead the Red Wolves to victory.

Arkansas State starter David Owen had a solid outing pitching 5.2 innings and allowing only an earned run. UAB starter Alex Luna was equally effective allowing only a run over six inning pitched.

UAB scored in the fourth inning on a sac bunt by third baseman Nathan Vincent that drove in Ryan Prinzing who was plunked to start the inning. Arkansas State would tie the game on a sac bunt by Schrimpf that would score Senior short stop Dustin Jones who reached on an error to start the inning.

In the sixth Blazer first baseman Jeff Schalk scored on a passed ball after hitting a one-out triple. UAB went to the pen with the lead 2-1 and brought in Sophomore Cory Eller to pitch the seventh. Arkansas State first baseman Matt Burgess led off the inning with a double and then with two outs pinch hitter Colin Massanelli reached base on an error by Blazers’ short stop Adam Smith that allowed Burgess to meander to third. Schrimpf singled  through the left side to score Burgess to tie the game.

After Eller walked Red Wolves’ designated hitter Ty Michelotti, second baseman Lucas Fedderson drove in Massanelli to give the Red Wolves the lead. Center fielder Austin Baker reached on a throwing error by Blazers’ second baseman Tyler Hambry which would allow Schrimpf and Michelotti to score increasing the Red Wolves lead to 5-2.

Red Wolves reliever Tanner Gaines had pitched two scoreless innings until the ninth when he surrendered a one-out walk to Sophomore second baseman Evan Peterson. Blazer pinch hitter Adam Lau doubled and Chase Davis grounded out to score Peterson cutting the lead to 5-3. Arkansas State sent in Colton Kibler who got the final out to end the game.

The Red Wolves salvaged the final game of the set in Birmingham. Fedderson went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Schrimpf went 1 for 2 with a run scored and two RBI.
